WINDOWS IN HISTORY

An off-the-wall explanation of out-the-window events.

For centuries, the people of Prague have been more than ordinary in their practice of throwing folks out of windows, events known as defenestrations. Between 1419 and 1948, there have been four incidents of note. Allow me to focus on the one where those defenestrated survived.

On 23 May 1618, Catholic officials arrived at the Bohemian Chancellery and provoked a heated argument with the Protestant lords. The dispute ended in the defenestration of three Catholic representatives from the third story of the building, estimated to be a seventy-foot fall. Here, the historical account differs according to perspective. Catholics claim they were saved by the Virgin Mary. Protestants point to the soft landing provided by a fortuitously placed dung pile.

The event precipitated the Thirty Years’ War and inspired the creation of the Defenestrated Dictionary.  Source-Wikipedia

EDITOR’S SIDE NOTE: I thought it to be a good idea to use AI to edit my inserted images. LOL! AI proceeded to edit entire pages, with sage explanations of my parched humor. I redlettered a few of them. (I hope I found them all.) If you find any I overlooked, let me know. – ed
